Come After Me

In church, we’ve spent two weeks on the latter part of Mark 8.  Actually, I *LOVE* that our pastor works thru books of the Bible, telling us why Christ did what at the time He did.  It makes so much sense… and it flows.  Anyhow, it all started about here:

And He [Jesus} began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.  And He spake that saying openly. (31, 32a)

The thing about this is that Jesus has just turned His journey back towards Jerusalem for the last time.  And now that they were headed straight towards His pending death, He has stopped speaking in parable and hidden meanings and just stated what’s going to happen straightforward.  In order to brace the disciples for what was to happen.  He told them plainly that the heads of the church were going to cause Him to suffer, to be rejected, and then to be killed… but He would rise from the dead three days later.  Can you IMAGINE….?!   Pastor is right – I mean, wouldn’t it shock you that someone you love would not only tell you that He’s about to be murdered, but who would do it?  Yeesh!

Pastor also noted that Christ called Himself the ‘Son of man’… and referred to Daniel, where Christ is referred to as the coming ‘Son of man’.  And Anna did a double take and compared the sufferings of Christ under the church to the sufferings of God’s chosen people under the beasts (world empires).

Mark 8:31                                               Daniel 2:31-34
He will suffer                                 (Silver) Persia would cause God’s chosen people to suffer
He will be rejected
(Brass) Greece would cause them to be rejected
He will be killed                            (Iron)  Rome would kill Christ, and His chosen people
He will rise on the third day       (Iron/Clay)  RRE/EU will see the church rise on the third day.

Maybe I look too closely at things, but the line-up correlates perfectly.  And as I’ve said SO many times, God is a God of order… everything always fits perfectly together.   And for those of you who aren’t familiar with the early Christian church’s history, Rome tortured them.  Christians were fed to the lions in the Colloseum.  They were dipped (live) in wax and used as torches to light the city streets.  They were slaughtered by the tens of thousands.

And the ‘third day’ reference is used EVERYWHERE in the NT – from the Canaanite wedding to the story of the good Samaritan.  There’s more on that in Sixes and Sevens on the sidebar.  There will be two thousand years from Christ to Judgment Day – and He’ll return on the Third Day.

ANYHOO… while Pastor noted that Jesus told the disciples plainly WHO would kill Him, he didn’t say that Jesus also told them HOW He would die… three verses later:

Whosoever will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.  (34b)

Remember… this is before Jesus is arrested by A LOT.  and here He’s talking about taking up a ‘CROSS’?  Whoa!  He’s even telling them the way He will die!  But because it’s such an important verse regarding self-denial, salvation, and Christianity… it got missed.  I wonder if the duisciples said, “Cross?  Did He just say ‘cross’?”  I love thinking about this stuff!

As if the Daniel/Mark thang and the ‘Cross’ thang weren’t enough, I saw something else that wasn’t talked about, too…  Whosoever will come after Me…  follow Me.  In order to ‘come after’ you must ‘follow’.  Come after and follow.  Hrm!!  What’s the difference?

But now is Christ risen from the dead, and beCOME the firstfruit of them that slept…but every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afteward they that are Christ’s at his COMING.  (1 Corinthians 15:20,23)

Whosoever will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.  (34b)

Do you see it?  Christ had COME to be the first man to rise to eternal life.  The firstfruits.  If we are to COME after Him – to rise to eternal life – we are to deny ourselves, take up His cause (for the message of the Cross is His message), and Follow Him.  Whoa!!  ((okay, maybe that doesn’t speak to you, but it dopes to me!  That’s Christ HIMSELF talking about the rapture!!))

Anyhow, this being my little spot on the Net to yak, there are my thoughts.  ((grins))
