Dayenu

from Wikipedia
Dayenu (Hebrew:דַּיֵּנוּ) is a song that is part of the Jewish holiday of Passover. The word “Dayenu” means approximately “it would have been enough for us”, “it would have been sufficient”, or “it would have sufficed” (day in Hebrew is “enough”, and -enu the first person plural suffix, “to us”). This traditional up-beat Passover song is over one thousand years old. The earliest full text of the song occurs in the first medieval haggadah, which is part of the ninth-century Seder Rav Amram.[1] The song is about being grateful to God for all of the gifts he gave the Jewish people, such as taking them out of slavery, giving them the Torah and Shabbat, and had God only given one of the gifts, it would have still been enough.

The first time we ever heard of Dayenu, it was during Twebrew school lessons.  The lesson is less than three minutes long, if you want to watch it.  Halfway thru the lesson, she tells us we now have enough letters to sing the traditional Passover song, ‘Dayenu’… and she teaches it to us.  I thought it was… well, simple, but since it’s a kid song, that’s okay, right?  It’s just for fun.  Like ‘Jingle Bells’, only with REAL meaning.  “Yehovah could’ve only to bless us once, but can you BELIEVE the amount of times He has blessed us!?”  Who wouldn’t like a song like that?!!  Here’s the lesson (and song the way we first heard it):

We have two songs that we like to listen to… both of them are older and by the Fountainheads… Comin’ Home/Dayenu and Breakin’ Free.  Their Dayenu is NOT the traditional one, though.  It’s catchy, but… yeah.  We listen to these a lot.  Definitely worth checking out.  Should I share the links?  Sure, why not:

Well, I’ve been looking for Pesach/Passover songs to listen to this year, and… They. Are. Lame. out there.  There’s a (Disney’s Frozen) parody of ‘Let it Go’ that is… cringe-worthy done by Aish.  Six13 did Uptown Funk Passover and… hommigosh, painful.  They’ve got that ‘DJ’s got us fallin’ in love’ song with this rap that made me hit the ‘X’ button repeatedly and very, very fast.  Oh, ugh and yuck and yuck and ugh!!!!  The Maccabeats did a remix of ‘Les Miserables’ as an Exodus song.  I’ll post it on my FB on Thursday, since… I have to sing ‘Les Miserables’ on Thursdays.  It’s all miserable, all the time.  Nothing makes it better.

BUT..!!  This morning the Maccabeats announced a new Passover video for this year – Dayenu!

I thought, ‘Oh, Lord.  Please don’t let it be so awful that I can’t possibly stand to listen to the whole thing.’  And we fired it up… and it’s… cute.  It’s cute.  It’s got that simple little song, done in every style you can imagine.  And there’s a little nod at the end towards the coming Elijah, which is kewl, too.  But anyhow… here it is.  In case you’d like a smile, today.
